Ooo looked what has popped up in the garden! I am pretty sure that this is a watermelon, I popped in a few seeds around a month ago, and had all but given up hope. I've been wanting to grow watermelons for ages, but wasn't having any luck at all... and now there are three of these little babies in the pea and bean garden bed. I hope they are all going to get along. I suppose that watermelons grow like pumpkins??? If they do, it should be pretty easy to train the out of the bed and onto the ground next to it, leaving the peas and beans to grow upwards and do their thing. Oh I so hope I get some watermelons! This one is from a seed I bought at Carseldine Garden World, called Sugar Baby. They are supposed to produce small round sweet melons, "a perfect size for a fridge". That last part cracks me up. If I get a watermelon out of this, it will be eaten way before it hits the fridge.
Looking at my Digger's Planting Guide you plant watermelon from July to October in Brisbane, and seeds take 10 days to germinate. I'd say that I sowed mine in June, which perhaps explains why they have taken a bit longer to germinate... Grow little melons, grow!
