When Things Come Easily

I am guilty of not loving and caring for my cherry tomatoes. They just grow too easily, they don't make me work hard enough to appreciate them. I don't even plant them, like everyone eles's garden I'm sure, they just pop up everywhere... there must be a cherry tomato planting secret society... people walking innocently past your garden, no one looking, quick, a handful of seeds into your yard.
So that might be going a bit far, but they do pop up everywhere. They are by far the most prolific and healthiest producers in my garden, and like I said, I don't take care of them. I let them grow where they are, if they fall over I leave them to decide whether to live or die themselves, and I would never even think of watering them. The treat them mean approach just works.
Anyway, this year something different happened.

I ran out.

I had a huge run of them in winter, up to the point of making jam out of them, but I didn't think to plant any more... the old ones died off, and all of a sudden, I was tomatoless. And boy, did I feel it. I was used to grabbing them out of the garden as needed, and all of a sudden, I had to buy them at the shop! It wasn't fun.

So now that I am lucky enough to have them back, I'm not going to let them go again. Tomorrow I'll be out there staking and watering them. Love for my tomatoes is going to shine through... it might just be the end of them :p.

We never do know what we've got until it's gone, do we?

What do you mean! Tomatoes in Winter! I reckon I live in paradise, except I I don't tomatoes in Winter. Next year I am going to plant a couple in pots and take them out on warm days, but keep them inside near a window when it isn't sunny. I wonder if it will work! Bought ones might as well be made out of plastic...yuk!

It must be great to have a ready source of tomatoes right in your own yard. I hope someday to have my own veggie patch. Your tomatoes look yummy! Have a great weekend. Jennifer

I just planted a tomato plant so I'll take your advice and just let it do it's own thing.

ps, thanks for the great blog!!

Jennifer, I sneaked a peek at your blog and your photos are just magnificent, what a great photographer you are. And your flowers are amazing, I'm pretty sure you'd have no problem growing a few veggies!

Thanks a lot Neill, I do my own thing because I don't really know very much yet! But I think what went wrong with your other plants is that the manure you used was too fresh. Make a pile of the stuff and let it age, then use it. That should work really well I think.

Ali, they look awesome - do you know what variety they are? I'm not very good at tomatoes but I keep trying :)

No, they just pop up in amongst other things in the garden beds, I have no idea what kind they might be, I just eat them!

Your tomatoes look delicious and growing so well. We don't have luck with tomato last year. They don't survive the heatwave. I hope our tomato plants will give us some fruit like yours. I enjoy reading your blog.
