But I didn't... this is just one onion.
I found it in the chicken coop months ago, it had produced some shoots just sitting there so I popped it into the ground in amongst everything else. I wasn't sure what to expect, I am remarkably devoid of onion experience.
Now that I come to think of it, I really have no idea how they grow. From a seed? Fairy dust?
I do know though that if you put them in the ground they seem to multiply... and the stems smell yummy too.
Has my onion turned into an eschallot?

Your Onion hasn't turned into a Shallot however you spell it ;-)
It looks like you might have tossed out a Red Salad Onion and by the magic of the Universe, it landed in your garden. The tops are deliciously edible and I grow old sprouting Onions just for that. They rarely go to seed in Brisbane so enjoy the greens - few things in life are free and Onion tops are one of those rare things.
Fairy Dust - delightful thought. If only. Onions, Chives, Shallots, Bunching Onions etc except for Garlic which is usually grown from the cloves - are grown from seeds which take forever to sprout.
Keep chopping the leaves until the plant expires, I'm interested to know how long this can go on for. I've a couple of brown Onions in the garden for their greens so we'll both find out :-)
I'm not an expert on onions -- I just grow them. :) Most of the time I don't know the name of what I bought at the Feed & Seed. But I thought it could be a multiplier onion:

Lol Elaine, I really mean an eschallot, not a shallot, I don't think they are the same thing. Eating the tops sounds like a great idea, never being short of a bit of onion for flavour sounds like my idea of heaven!
Eliza it does look like a multiplier onion, but surely my normal onion didn't just turn into one?
You know the bizzare thing, I don't eat red onions, I don't have a photo to help my memory, but I am sure this was just a normal white onion at the beginning... my memory is an unreliable thing however!
The onion is interesting but it is the gumboots I admire most!
Hazel, once again you have proven yourself of a woman of impeccable taste. Those gumboots are seriously fabulous.
