Clearly.
I feel a little bit funny about straying from the vegetable patch, but I hope that you bear with me... I couldn't not post about this sideboard.
Well, dressing table in fact... I think. But sideboard in my house.
See, on Saturday night, the boys and I trekked over to a friend's home in the next suburb, and I noticed up and down her street that we had hit the holy grail.
It was hard rubbish week.
I love hard rubbish. For me it equals the thrill of the hunt for produce in the garden, that little buzz you get when you spot something exciting is just like discovering that your banana tree is fruiting. And I thought I would share my wonderful find because I think that even though it's not a vegetable, the new life given to hard rubbish is along the lines of the same philosophy of what I think most gardeners share.
Not spending money.
I just love this piece of furniture.
I almost died on the spot when I saw it... as did the boys' father I'm sure, he was being very kind and driving me round to look at things (I am too chicken to look at stuff people are dumping by myself), and when he saw this I think he thought, "hmm... heavy". But it wasn't really, it just required emptying the car of the children and I so that it fit.
I think it is a 1950's piece, it's got those angled legs and I pretty sure the surface is melamine. It won't be to everyone's taste (my mum will not be in love), but it suits the house, and I adore it, and that's what matters isn't it, surrounding yourself with things you love?
We did get lots of other things too, but this was by far the most exciting... so exciting in fact that I looked up the link to hard rubbish days around Brisbane, I think this might become a monthly event.
ps yes, it's my hand :)

Oh Ali - I think your sideboard is lovely - and just so suits youand your home!
I have just had a peek at your blog (for the first time ever!!!) and am just totally absorbed. What a talent you are.
Aww Esther, all I want is to see you flitting around playgroup with a butterfly net!
Thank you so much for your lovely words, for that I will save you some eggs come knitting night :)
Well, isn't Esther a sweeheart! I like the dresser too and am always amazed at how things come into and go out of fashion. I went round to a building site today and picked up some lovely offcuts of different coloured corrugated iron for a project I have in mind. Free is good! Repurposing something someone else has discarded if priceless!
Oh, I forgot to say, i love the photo of the knob with you reflected...very arty!
Ooo Hazel I am glad you noticed that! And yes, Esther, a lovely lovely friend of mine, she is a bit fabulous.
LOVE!
I LOVE hard rubbish week. I have picked up so many wonderful things over the years, ...if we drive past a pile of stuff on the side of the road, my children automatically ask, 'do you want that mum?' ...what more can a mum want..and they would help me lug it into the car if need be....
What great storage in that set of drawers...
Ooo Suzanne, my boys are very young, and they were so into it. They desperately wanted a little table and we drove round and round until we found them a good one. They were so excited, and actually so was I, the table is gorgeous. I can't wait 'till it's our turn next month, watch out neighbours!
And Mrs Rabbit, how are the tomatoes going? I still haven't made my way over to Bunnings, although that's a good thing, I'll prepare them a comfy bed first.
Well Ali, I am most impressed with your sideboard, can just see you all packed into the car and hard rubbish hunting. Cannot wait to see the boys table and other wonderful treasures. m
