The other day I had my leaky roof repaired. As predicted, the rain in Brisbane has now stopped, although I have been informed that this is but a temporary reprieve. When I tried to argue that my roof no longer leaks therefore further rain is unlikely, between you and me, I did feel as though a few people were a little skeptical.
But onto other matters.
Our new garden bed. I cannot name one thing that I have seen that is more fabulously brilliant looking than our lovely, lovely new garden bed. I love it. It is everything I have ever wanted in a home for our vegetables. Rectangular, strong, put together, and in my possession. I could go on, but you'll lose enthusiasm before I do.
Now as you gaze upon the sturdy roofing rivets holding this gem of a bed together, you are probably thinking, "Gee, that Ali is quite the handyman".
Well, I hesitate to say this, but you would be wrong.
This is Bob the Builder's work.
Yep. Bob was quoting on my roof, and when distracted by my marvellously ineffective efforts at drilling holes, took out his roofing rivets and stuck my garden bed together.
Bob is, quite frankly, a bit of a champion.
And this photo above should solve the mystifying puzzle as to what we did with the mulcher.
We mulched!
Goodness it was fun playing with that thing. Feeding in the branches reminded me of feeding goats, munch munch munch munch until it's all gone. Fabulously satisfying.
Bob, the mulcher, and my beautiful new garden bed.
This weekend, I scored a trifecta.

Nothing like a raised garden bed....and of course someone helping to put it together...
Is it for vegies or out the front? Cant wait to see it all planted...
We have a mulcher and they are a great tool..pity the neighbours dont like it much...
It is for out the front and for veggies! We get the most sun in the front yard and there's enough space for around 4 garden beds. I cannot wait to plant, and I am so glad we share the mulching love :)
They are SO much FUN!
That is too much munch for me. :-) In my last house I used to grow veggies in the front garden. It was a town house and had no back yard. Well it had a deck and I grew silver beet and strawberries in pots. It was in a 'disadvantaged' area and my friends were amazed that nothing was pinched. But you know what, working in the front garden gives people permission to stop and talk. When I had a glut I used to hand veggies out (to the neighbours and to absolute strangers wandering past}. I think the neighbours would have drawn and quartered anyone who touched my garden.
Oh that sounds lovely Hazel... you can't really see very well over our hedge (I am vertically challenged though), but people do walk past (there's a footpath in front of our house) and I remember getting comments on the sunflowers. We just rarely use the front garden, so I am hoping that this will help it to be used a little more.
This is my second house with a front-yard vege garden ... my first next-door neighbour was horrified but I told here veges were plants, too. She never objected to receiving excess in exchange for scraps though!
Owning a mulcher, however modest as mine is, is one of the best garden-related activities there is. Meeeerrrrooowwww ... nothing beats the sound of huge piles of vegetation getting chopped.
Good for you in getting a tradie to do something for nothing - there are decent ones out there although most are Ned Kellys.
Elaine that day we spent mulching was one of the most fun of my recent life (I was also young and fun once, but that time is most certainly over). It is indeed extremely satisfying.
And Bob the Builder amazed me, he's coming out to put a roof on the deck next week, I'll have more beds waiting for him!
Nice Bob...x
Deeper, woman, you need a deeper bed. I've found that around 3 feet is the optimum depth. It takes a shed load of soil, but no more bending.
Get that lazy bastard Bob back to finish the job.
So, Ali, you admit to sharing a bed with a tradesman, with whom you enjoyed "mulching love" in full view of the neighbours. What sort of a way to carry on it that, I ask???
BTW:I had to look up the meaning of "trifecta". I thought it was a latin name for a plant of some sort!
You are right IG, what was I thinking!
Bob the Builder... hmmm? It's always nice to have a handy fellow around! :-) You really did have some fun with that shredder. I'd like to try one of those, myself!! Thanks for your recent visit. I'll try to return again - you have a fun blog!
You have found me out Mark, living a wild and untrammeled life surrounded by the vegetables... it's very interesting that you weren't familiar with the term "trifecta", and it just goes to show what a pack of gamblers we are here in Australia.
SG, I still have the borrowed shredder and today is the first day of my 2 1/2 weeks of holidays. Know what I am going to do today?
Mulch!
You've got me dreaming. Wouldn't it be wonderful to have your very own Bob the Builder at your total beck & call for a few days. Imagine all the jobs big and small (that normally take years to do) that they could finish. What a great idea for a present and it is my birthday soon- must put in an order. Not sure of my odds of success though!
Oh my goodness, a handyman on command... He'd look at my place and run for his life!
