A Perfect Day

We had a wonderful day today... it was easily the hottest day we'd had all year (oh yes I'm going to be like that for a while), the sun was shining and I am pretty sure the ground was actually steaming.

It was so lovely and hot that I knew to get through it we needed to seek shade and water. We did briefly consider the hose in the backyard, but on the spur of the moment we packed some sausages, bread and the children into the car, and headed off to a lovely picnic spot behind Mt Cootha.

And it was just magic. There was hardly anyone at all in this huge clearing, with heaps of shady trees, a gorgeous rock bed stream running through it, and best of all, wood fire BBQs. I love a campfire and like most people I adore the challenge of lighting one when the council has already provided lots of free firewood stacked neatly next to the BBQ.

We ate and drank and chased bush turkeys, and then went for a long walk upstream, right through the middle of the shallow water. The boys sat under little waterfalls and I didn't see one eel or leech in the water at all.

Tired and happy we all piled into the car to come home, and just before I came up the back stairs, I saw something perhaps even more wonderful than our already fabulously wonderful day.

The eggplant is eggplanting.

It's just small, but it's been long, long awaited.

I am almost an eggplant grower.

I think the fruit of eggplants are THE most beautiful fruit/vegetable. They are so preposterous...I mean who would design a shiny purple vegetable. Ant the plants are so puny. Congratulations on be an eggplant grower. Now you will have to plan what to do with it...

How ironic that you should write about BBQs and burning logs on the same day that Hazel tells us she is under a Severe fire hazard warning. But then I suppose you guys in Queensland have had rather a lot of rain recently...
Your eggplant (we call them aubergines of course) looks just great. I hope it will have many siblings. Funnily enough, this is one of the few veg I really do not like. It has great good looks, but I always find the skin stays tough and bitter whilst the flesh goes mushy (and absorbs as much oil as you care to allow it). Must be just me though, since this is probably the most popular veg in the world after the tomato.

That's a lovely new verb.

Barbecued eggplant Hazel, it's my favourite pre-dinner snack.

Mark I was surprised when the fire took, we've had so much rain, but it did, straight away too. The barbecues were so well designed, I really want one for my backyard. Not sure we are allowed to go lighting fires in the suburbs here though!

And Esther, thank you for noticing. I pride myself on my elastic use of the language, which serves beautifully to up my deficiency in actual vocabulary.
