Strawberry Steps

Whilst the majority of our fruit and vegetables seem to be enjoying some kind of relaxing suburban holiday in our garden, the strawberries are quietly but confidently buying up prime real estate and rapidly moving in.

Being far from adverse to the little red ball of fruit, I am planning to help them in their quest for backyard domination.

Mindful of Jackie French's advice to plant strawberries everywhere, "it doesn't matter if a few get squished", today I planted runners in between wooden planks to tread on and made strawberry steps.

Oh yummy! (Although my kids would sit down and lick their feet - they're a bit gross like that).

A nice idea, but it wouldn't work in my garden. I have found that birds and squirrels are VERY fond of strawberries. If you grow them here they have to be securely netted.
I have Raspberries instead; the spiny stems seem to deter many predators.
Is that a spiky Agave plant we see in the background? You'll be making your own Tequila next...

Ms Lottie my boys are too gross, so I will not mention what you have said for fear of giving them ideas!

For some reason Mark nothing eats my strawberries, apart from the boys and I and perhaps a little chomp here and there. Gosh I'd like to have raspberries, though I'm not sure they'd do well here.

It is an agave, and I have LOTS of them! Some tequila in that chilli tea would go down well :)

I am very proud of my straberries too - I put them in wine barrels under the citrus trees. However I am very jealous of your lovely healthy agave plant. We can grow them here but mine seem to have been made holy by the snails. Maybe the snails are making tequila.

Sorry 'strawberries'

Strawberries propagate vary fast. I have bought 4 plants few year ago and now I have more than a hundred. And I gave away a lot of them too.

I do believe you have convinced me to grow strawberries in my yard! We always had strawberries growing when I was a kid in upstate New York (125 miles above NYC). If we could grow them there, I should be able to grow them in Virginia. I'll give it a go! Thanks!

Awesome! And inspiring... here I was thinking I need to have enough room. A friend of mine called me yesterday to say she dug up her strawberry bed and she has 400 plants to spare if I want any!

It was the agave that caught my attention too. How big will it grow?

They are a striking plant, aren't they... I was a bit mad for them a few years ago and have quite a few. Mine are quite slow growing, the largest one I have is about half again the size of the one in the photo. I'm not 100% sure exactly how large they get, but I don't think the type I have grow to enormous proportions.

Do you have them in England?

Eliza read this: http://www.jackiefrench.com/backyard.html

I think you will like it :)

Veggie PAK, grow them! They are so much softer and sweeter home grown, it will bring back the child in you :)

vtlarica ana, mine don't propogate that fast! That's a fabulous amount of plants, do they fruit well?

GT, good on the snails... nice for them to have a little fiesta of their own. I think agave juice very sweet, sweeter than honey I have read. Perhaps that's what they like?

Mmm! Anybody who quotes my idol, Jackie French, is a mate of mine. My strawberries are starting to run too. I think I will go and find some interesting places to plant them.

Ooh they will be beautiful. Maybe I should take yours and Jackie's advice and plant mine all over the place. At the moment they're in a big basket but not doing that great.

Loving the idea of strawberry steps.
We have tried several times with strawberries and end up with grubs. Have now replanted all into baskets for the next crop and will see how it goes. I'm predicting that yours will go well and you and the boys will be enjoying them soon.

Mine aren't doing too well in their baskets either VG, possibly because I forget to water anything in baskets/pots. I am going to get the last ones out and plant the rest of the steps out.

Duchess I am hoping for a veritable sea of strawberries!

Hi Ali
Stumbled upon you through Duchess, love your blog :)
Have bookmarked it now so I don't lose track of you during my bloghopping.I wish we had your climate here in the UK, I am so envious of what you can grow down under :)

Hi Dreamer, thanks so much for your kind comments :) I get excited by snow photos, so I can understand your climate envy, sometimes the grass is greener on the other side of the equator. Oh boy that's funny, and it's pretty early too!
