Holiday Snaps

In an effort not to have you pop your eyeballs completely out of your head trying to take in all our photos, I thought I would just post a few snaps of my absolute favourite part of our holiday.

Even though I am pretty convinced that I broke my toe there.

So below is us making our way towards the Mele Cascades in Port Vila, Vanuatu. I absolutely fell in love with Vanuatu, it is just so rich and lush and tropical. We saw banana plants and paw paw trees, elephant apples and star fruit, honestly there were fruit trees growing everywhere, on the side of the road, in the middle of paths, and all of them were just dripping with lovely, ripe, healthy looking fruit.

I was ready to move there and start a garden immediately.
I think I am a little excited about getting there in that photo above... hurry up guys!

Mele Cascades are a series of waterfalls, pool after pool of gloriously crystal clear blue water, tumbling over these lovely big white rocks. The effect of the water with the white background was really quite stunning.
In the photo below you can see up to the top of the waterfall. I am convinced that here in Australia there is no way we would have been allowed to take the boys up there on the ropes, but of course in Vanuatu we were not only allowed, there were also some helpful young men standing in the water, helping clumsy tourists such as myself drag their small, brave children to the top where you could swim in behind the waterfall itself. I had never swum behind a waterfall before, and it now rates up there as one of the most exhilarating moments of my life... I think I may even have let out a triumphant little war cry.
Unfortunately we don't have any photos of us going up the ropes, nor did we capture me flat on my behind, fully dressed, in the water. Felix is a big fan of being carried, and I slipped and fell with him in my arms. And hurt my toe.
This is Felix and myself on our way back, dress sopping wet and me trying to mask the pain of my toe.
And at the end of our trek, a lovely cool drink and a swim in one of the pools of the falls. I am still thinking about how much my toe hurts, and how sure I am that it's broken.
I remember sitting there taking this photo and thinking that this is what I would suppose heaven to look like. But without a sore toe.
Our lovely driver William, when questioned as to what languages were spoken in Vanuatu, replied, "broken English". I believe this is what he was talking about.

I think it translates quite clearly myself.

What great photos - and what a wonderful time you had! I can certainly understand why you'd want to stay there! (Your children are precious!) :-)

Aww thank you SG, I do love our darling boys :) Our holiday really was lovely, and I was so proud of the kids, they took it all in and really were enthusiastic about it all.

Pity about the toe, wear it with warrior pride. Beautiful tropical snaps - looks lovely - and it looks like you all had a great time.

Wow, I am so very jealous of all that lush tropical scenery, looks like you had a wonderful time. I hope you are keeping off your toe and it's healing up well!

Glad you all had a great time, hope the boys didn't run you too ragged on the boat... I was a bit stressed when I took David at about 18 mths - the whole boat knew his name before we left port ;) 'David, come here''David don't do that''David where are you?!' lol

Poor Ali! Shame about the injury, but the toe will heal and you'll still be left with many happy memories, and of course the photos.
Vanuatu sounds great. It's a bit ironic that fruit grows wild all over the place there yet we all struggle to raise plants in our gardens!
I once spent a few weeks in PNG, where they speak Pidgin English, which is probably a bit like what you encountered in Vanuatu. A foreign language that can be mastered even by those who are bad at conventional spelling and syntax!

Simply gorgeous holiday photos. Very tropical. You have a beautiful family Ali. It looks a lovely relaxing place to be (even with a sore toe!)
I bet Felix thought it was real cool, Mummy taking a dunk with him in the water ;-)

Oh Donna that's funny you poor thing. No, the boys were really good, they spent most of their time in the spa with their floaties on charming the older ladies!

Oh and Mark, William our driver said their English was just like the English of PNG, so yes, fabulous stuff!

Whenever toes got bumped on our hols the family saying went. "No point in getting it X-rayed: the treatment is just to strap it to the next toe even if it is broken." Hope you got plenty of sympathy!

You'll remember that holiday!

Mal I am actually pretty sure it wasn't broken, but when I hurt myself, I like everyone to know. And I like the injury to look really bad too :D

And yes, everyone was properly sympathetic, they had to be as I kept shoving my toe in their face!

White on the rocks is calcium from memory - they have to change the ropes because they too get it on them then they are too hard to hold and become dangerous.
I climbed the mountain behind and then abseiled from the top to the bottom. Loved it. By the time we got to the bottom we were exhausted so never got to really enjoy the water. Just sort of floated to get over it.

Elsie May I saw people abseiling when we were there, and it looked just wonderful. I would have loved to have had a go, but can't quite see me abseiling with a small person on my back!

That's interesting about the calcium, isn't the effect marvelous? All the rock pools here that I know of have black rocks, and the white made a huge impression on me. Did you go for a swim after at the bar?
