Felix and I went to Luka's school and helped out with his prep class's muscle strokes lesson today. The class is actually called gross motor skills, but Felix calls any form of exercise muscle strokes, and I personally think that sounds like a whole lot of fun.
Four kids were injured during the class, these small people don't seem to have any sense of personal space whatsoever and heads were colliding like coconuts. Blood and tears and snot everywhere. And "mine". The ball is mine, the yellow one is mine, give me the pink bat it's mine, if I can see it it's mine, doesn't matter if you are touching it, it's still mine, gimme gimme, mine, mine, mine.
It must have rubbed off on me, because I am pretty sure that at one stage I may have stared down a four year old and said mate, that ball is mine.
Bad mummy helper.
In the photo above though there's no fight, it's definitely mine.
Even though I'm not sure what it is.
It's fat and oval and hairy and it's growing on a vine. I really want it to be honeydew so I can then post it as H is for Honeydew, but that may prove to be difficult, given that I'm quite confident there has never been a honeydew melon in this house.
But honestly, what else is as exciting as honeydew that begins with an H?
No, horseradish is not exciting.
The photo above shows what the fruit looks like when it's little, and below is the flower.
It's mine and I'm keeping it. But... what on earth is it?

Maybe rock melon? Apple cucumber? But , who cares, its growing and its on a vine and thats more than what is growing on vines at my house!!!!!!!!
You are not a bad mummy helper...I dont even help at school anymore...I used to..bit hard with a two year old now, but,...I love MY children, and am not, I repeat, not...very good with other peoples...especially, the mine, mine, mine type.
So the fact that you offer in the first place, makes you a good mummy helper...
I'm thinking squash or maybe zucchini?
I have always found other peoples kids hard to deal with also ..lol. You get so used to your own.
I never volunteered to teach Prep/Entry/First...whatever you call the first year of school...I always thought it was like animal training. I liked them from the second year on when someone else had sort of 'broken them in'. I taught Art, Italian, and Library as a specialist at different times...and the day I knew I had those little snotty ones with the attention spans of gnats was always the hardest day to get out of bed. Individually fine...but as a group. Shudder. Don't know what your veggie is...looking forward to hearing what it is.
You've stumped me, Ali ... Had to happen sometime ;-) Apart from the obvious suggestion of waiting until it's mature, post the pix on BLF and see what eventuates.
That melon / squash looks hairy. Is it a Hairy Bitter Melon??? What sort of melons do you buy to eat? Have you put some seeds from a bought melon into your compost? In my experience melon seeds germinate readily in home-made compost, so maybe that's where it came from.
Could it perhaps be one of these hairy cucumners?

(It's a great site - a bit warmer than the UK)
That's cucumber.
p.s. horseradish is pretty exciting in my book. (Until it takes over)
Love the school reality check. Aren't kids fab!
Ooo Mal, it looks a lot like one! It could be, I guess... but I've never even seen one before, let alone thrown one into the compost. Although with my fabulous new green thumb perhaps fruit and vegetables are just manifesting under my regime :p
Mark, I am thinking perhaps rockmelon, although hairy bitter melon would be quite fabulous for the letter H!!
Elaine, you'd never be stumped :) I will wait it out, much more exciting that way. I am really hoping it's a rockmelon, seeing as I have grown them before and ruined two perfect ones by picking them early. Seems to be a habit of mine.
Hazel - Italian!!! How fabulous. And you were right to steer clear of the wee -est ones, they are little bundles of inattention.
Suzanne, the more I look at it, and I am looking at it at least once every hour, the more I am convinced it's rockmelon. Isn't it a bit late though???
I guess we'll soon find out!
Mal, horseradish is just plain old HOT! I remember eating some as a child, when I wasn't expecting any heat, weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeheeeeeee! Goodness me it put me off for life.
Looked up H vegetables cause it got me wondering - best one (from a laughing point of view) was the hot potato. I wonder if its an actually sort, whether its a description of once cooked or someone that had kids the right age for Wiggles. Lots of herbs and a Hailstone Radish - the photo made it look perfect. http://www.edenseeds.com.au/content/seeditem.asp?id=282§ion=1
You don't have any habanero chillis do you?
My apple cucumbers don't look like that but good luck finding out what it is. Hope it tastes good.
it would be very hairy for a cucumber and a zucchini and my rockmelons where not hairy either..maybe you have your own variety that has spontanously sprouted from the love you garden grows...
I like kids when they are young.. i'm a large women so
1-they are mezmerized by my size and
2-they are just plan scared of me
I enjoy the power I have .cackle cackle..wait throws my head back and cackle cackles thats better
FarmGirl that's rather hilarious... you are right to enjoy the power, I'd let it go straight to my head personally! Now even though I've been complaining about them, I like little kids too. I think they are fun and more importantly, they think that everything is fun. What a fabulous quality to have. More of us should try to hang on to it.
Elsie May, I'd love to grow a hot potato! I will have to google it and see.
I'm thinking it could be rockmelen, I grew them once and remember them being very hairy...What do the leaves on the vine look like, this would help you detemine what it could be!!!Good Luck!
I am leaning towards the melon of rock GJ, I just googled some images and the leaves and flowers look about right. Bring on the autumn rockmelon!!
