I really do hope that this doesn't offend anyone, but my fig is having a second coming...
Yep.
You might remember from this post here, that it has already figged once this year. Well, it's doing it again.
There are nine new figs in total, and one left from the first figging that I still haven't eaten yet. Because I am patient and never pick fruit too early and ruin it you see.
I have read that the Black Genoa variety, the kind that I have, will often fig twice, and I am very proud indeed that my plant has decided to go along with this.
What is interesting about this fig, is that it has exactly as many leaves as it does figs. It's not the healthiest specimen I've ever seen, but this is the third time it has figged since I put it in the ground, and as long as it keeps figging it up, I'm happy for it to look a wee bit odd.
And I did finally manage to pick a few at the correct stage of ripeness (subjecting them to the wiggle test worked perfectly, thank you to those who suggested it), and they were as sweet as honey, just divine.
And that's the trinity.
I sincerely hope someone gets that.

Amen to a nice cheery post after yesterday!
'one left after the first figging' amused me greatly.
Oh yes, I couldn't get enough sunny, cheery photos today after the dreadful toad episode. I'm so glad you liked the figging, hopefully that one left will be ready tomorrow.
the Cook and I are going up the road tomorrow to squeeze that man's figs. Maybe we will be figging with you!
I have never been figged well...I grew a fig and it figged well enough for a newcomer but the fig taste was undesireable,my husband spat it out and said what the fig are all those bloody chef on about..So i pulled the fig out BUT now I read this post I think maybe i didn't let it rippen enough..so what is this secret you talk of when you say wiggle???
Oh Joyfulhomemaker, an unripe fig is a terrible thing to put in your mouth indeed... kind of like eating glue. I am pretty sure it was Veggiegobbler who told me to gently wiggle them on the tree, and only if they come off by themselves are they ripe. They don't ripen off the tree at all, so once off, if they aren't ripe, then no fig. But ripe... oh yum. Try to fig again... you'll like it.
Hazel I'd enjoy nothing more than to fig together... I will give mine a wiggle tomorrow while you start on your unsuspecting man; let us fig!
Here figgy, figgy, figgy!
Figgy and prosciutto, figgy jam, grilled figgy with a hint of brown sugar onatop and a dollop of creme fraiche....
Iv never eaten a fig before im funny with trying differnt foods im worse than a fussy toddler lol
The prime message I get from this blog is 'pick when it's ready'.
The top picture glares my eyes!

Crikey! Your blog and its comments are getting very erudite now. Good job I paid attention in Bible Studies all those years ago...
Nice figs, and the sun looks fab. We've a forecast for snow at easter (shock).
Have you had a vision Ali? Divine Figs ... oh yes! One of the planet's best products in my not-at-all-humble opinion. Gorgeous photo!
Good to hear Black Genoa is at it again - just remember that they don't need much fertiliser or you'll get leaves and no figs. And leaving isn't any good! Only figging is good.
The deciduous trees are entering their slower phase now, I am surprised it figged at this time but you grab what you get given. Leave it until spring to give a handlful of compost or whatever you use, coz it should slow down and shed all its leaves.
There's a great story with pix in the Biodynamic Growing magazine, when I get permission I will post some of it on Brisbane Local Food as soon as I can. The local Sunshine Coast BD grower keeps his trees small and the pruning system produces good results.
I'm jealous!
I love fresh(ish) figs, but it'll NEVER get hot enough here to grow them!
Enjoy one on my behalf eh?!
I'm having dreadful flashbacks to Catholic school R.E classes!
It's a miracle ;-)
You're a funny girl Ali. A good play on words I must say.
As for the figs, I say well done. Looks so much nicer than those pasty anaemic(and expensive) things I've seen in the fruit shop.
Sorry I have that song Alalouya (or how ever you spell it) after reading your title. I want to get a fig just for the leaves - I love them - and don't worry I won't be going Adam and Eve just like the look of them. Thanks for posting this Ali. Sorry happy for you and your second flush of fruit. Did you see Masterchef and their figgy recipes?
Oh yes ElsieMay, the fabulous Leonard Cohen! I will kick myself forever for missing out on his recent(ish!) concert... didn't watch Masterchef, what did they make?
Wendy they are yum... I've never had a store bought one, not being a huge fig fan before. I am now though.
Nutty Gnome I will think of you when I slice one delicious fresh juicy fig in half - no problem!
Elaine I'd love to see the article - I really need to keep my trees small. They are all either close to the house or close to my neighbour's. I know, not smart :)
Kelli, snow at easter... oh my. We are going camping for easter weekend and I am worried it will be a little cool at night. As in I might need socks, not as in snow!
Mark I am just writing to my most learned audience. Religion, politics, made up words - let no subject be outside the realms of the humble gardening blog!
Yes Esther, and it only took me two ruined rockmelons, to gluey figs and a gross pumpkin to learn my picking lesson... and put your sunglasses on, the sun is very strong here in Australia.
Yum Daffodil, but does the subject of your profile photo know your predilection for porcine products?
and Primitive Ole Frugal Mamma - try one!
