Count Them Baby!

Have I ever mentioned here that I am a little eggplant obsessed?

It isn't because they are my favourite vegetable - as you would logically think given my obsession with growing prolific quantities of them - oh no, I wouldn't even put an eggplant up there in my top ten.

It's because an eggplant plant was the very first vegetable to thwart me.

It was pretty much the first vegetable that I ever brought home from the nursery as a little teeny tiny seedling. And I lavished all the love and care and attention on it like the firstborn that it was. And it grew... and grew, and grew, and it became big, and lush, and beautiful, but do you think I could get it to be bountiful?

Nope... it just took up space and insulted me by offering a teeny tiny eggplant the size of a golf ball every few months.

I took it as a personal affront and ended up ripping it out. And now, every time I have an auberginial success, I think to myself...

"In your FACE eggplant!"

Maybe I will have more luck with eggplant next year. I am going out now, in the dark, with a torch to rip mine out. Then next year I am going to plant some more and tell them they had better be as good as yours! Aren't they gorgeous though? So round and smooth and plastic looking. Come to think of it...they are real aren't they?

Hey Ali, wanna know what I did in bed last night?

Maybe yell at them a bit before you rip them up. Put a bit of fear into them.. and yes, plastic... don't tell anyone here, but when I have to fake a photo...

and yes... absolutely yes. Even if I have to leave the room, yes.

Do tell.

Phoebe, that's why I think it's an eggplant and not a silly French aubergine. It's clearly and EGGplant people!

Cathy, rip it out and stop letting Hazel lead you astray.

Suzanne, there's no hope for you, you have a potty mind!

And Hazel - you had a threesome with some eggplants in bed? I didn't read that part of the book?!

What gorgeous, perfect globes! Auberginial geniusness stupendified!

We're the reverse, maybe our Sydney weather is more conducive to them, but eggplants are one of the few things we can grow well. Tomatoes get wilt, capsicums are a disaster, but eggplants just seem to keep going until we pull them out.

dear Ali, and assorted commenters, I am clearly missing a lot by buying and eating but not growing such rounded perfect green beauties. Very funny post and comments ... cheers, catmint

Catmint they are white! Lol, they do look greenish in the photos though - I'd never noticed that!
