You know how sometimes you are on the verge of sleep, when all of a sudden you remember something of vital importance?
I had one of those moments last night...
Blissfully drifting off, lovely and toasty warm under my doona, when all of a sudden I am sitting bolt upright, eyes wide open, one thought on my mind - I hadn't seen the bay tree.
Earlier on in the day I had been admiring my strawberries. I usually have a fairly mild success with strawberries, I grow enough for the boys and I to enjoy straight from the garden, but never really any more than that. This year though, I am hoping it might be a little different. After all that rain we had last year the strawberries had a huge growth spurt, and now I'd estimate they cover an area around seven metres long and one metre wide. The garden is absolutely chockers with strawberry plants, and I spent some time pulling some up and clearing them away from the base of the fruit trees.
But what I didn't remember, at around 11pm, was clearing any away from my teeny tiny bay tree. The one that is so small it only has around five leaves. I knew it was in there somewhere, but I couldn't remember seeing it.
I couldn't remember seeing it at all.
I somehow managed to get back to sleep, but was outside at first light, eyes sweeping back and forth over the strawberry patch, anxiously searching for my teeny tiny bay tree.
And I found it. It took a quite a while, but I did.
Can you?

Phew!
Aw, bless it!
Yes, little blue mouse, bless those three little leaves ali....I hope it likes strawberries!
Baby bays are so cute! I wouldn't be brave enough to plant mine in the ground, I'd probably go to sleep one night and wake up with a monster tree.
i did i did i did ... but only just. ;) v
Yes, spotted it! Bet you're looking forward to this summer's crop of strawberries
"Missing Bay tree!" - the stuff of nightmares... And yes, I can spot a Bay tree at a hundred paces. Mind you, it is rather unobtrusive isn't it? Might be a few years before you feel justified in picking some leaves from it! I just like the idea of a strawberry bed seven metres long.
Firstly, I think you are the only person I know who would name their bay tree. I mean i know I was looking for a name for the new rooster...but a bay tree called Wally?
Secondly, if you took a leaf out of Mr Willis' book and had all your strawberries in neat lines and drills, you wouldn't have lost Wally in the first place.
Yes, Hazel, I was wondering about the name too... Is there some obscure Aussie significance to the name "Wally" that I might have missed?
Great strawberry growing Ali.
Loved playing Wheres Wally. He looks healthy enough just still a baby. The strawberries can look after him.
Just what you need to keep those rampant strawbs at bay?
I think bay is very slow growing, so probably quite content tucked in amongst those strawberries for now - Seven by one meter? wow! that is a huge strawberry patch. :0
Hazel and Mark, Wally is a character in a book... Waldo in some countries I believe... you have to search for him, hence, Where's Wally... Anyway, the bay tree's name is Bob.
Yep, there it is! Goodness, it's small!
Of course, I know who Wally is!
Hee hee, and to think that I was planning on casting aspersions on your age and not being up with Wally.
AA, I think the patch is around 7 metres long, perhaps longer! It didn't start out as a strawberry patch, it has just ended up as one... I have two long garden beds running along one side of my house and they just sort of took over one of them.
