Our family is very lucky in that just up the road from where we live, there is the most fabulous produce barn In The World.
Now it's not fabulous because of its shiny displays or its fabulous range, quite the opposite, it's a little haphazard and most of the interesting things you would want to buy display a large Not For Sale sign.
No, its marvelousness is in what it isn't as much as what it is. It's not modern or fancy or polished. It's old and full of character and a somewhat smelly charm. They have heaps of animals there (most of which are Not For Sale) - a shetland stallion, an enormous sow called Elvis, talking cockatoos, goats, guinea pigs, rats, ducks, and chickens. Loads of chickens, fancy ones and plain ones and funny ones. Oh and birds, peacocks and doves and all sorts of things that I try not to look at because some things just don't belong in a cage at all.
And the people who work there... I don't know where they are from, but I suspect they are all family, because there is young and old and each and every one of them has character. And kindness. They give the boys hay to feed to the goats and Elvis, let them nurse the baby animals, and even let me cuddle the cutest little baby pig EVER.
Well anyway, enough blather. The boys and I went there yesterday, and we bought baby chicks.
Two white Leghorns and two black Australorps.
Evie, Charlie, Batman and Lulu, welcome to our world.
Oh, and the post title. As we were leaving the produce barn with our chicks in a box, one of the guys who worked there said, "Chicks going cheap". "Oh yes," I replied earnestly, "I got them for such a good price, aren't they cute?"
What a numbnut.

You can never have too many chicks. Your little boy is sooo sooo gorgeous!
Oh, fun, fun, fun.....my little leghorn/australorpe cross girls are beginning to lay, we suspect it was Tiffany, who laid a tiny little white egg yesterday! Nice, you will get brown and white eggs....
Enjoy those stinky, flighty little fluff balls...dont the kids have such great fun with them?
Aaaw fantastic and so cute.
Love it... love the names of your cute little cheepers!
your little boys face is adorable ,you can see in his eyes him pleading with you..please muuuum can i put her in my bed tonight just this once please
Lol, he is turning her upside down to keep her calm... I found them both in there earlier chanting "calm, calm. calm" to them. Quite entertaining, both chickens and boys... and Mrs Goggins, who wants to eat them... would a cat kill them?
Ali, you're on the slippery slope... It'll be goats next, I'm sure.
Oh Ali...YES... a cat would easily kill them...make sure you have wire over that there box tonight!!!!!!!!! They will follow your boys to bed if given half a chance and nestle in their quilt....pooooweeeeyyyy can you imagine..? But yes, do keep them safe from feline friends/foes.......
Mark, not goats, but a piggy. I am dying for one of those teeny little miniature piggies. I believe they have them in England... if you see one - grab it for me?
Suzanne they are in a box in the bathroom, with the door closed... and last night I made poor Mrs Goggins stay outside - otherwise I'd have been up and checking every five minutes.
they are gorgeous! wee chookies are such fun. but VERY dangerous, you do know that? You are on the slippery slope now and four just won't be enough...
Lol, cute as they are, four will have to be enough! We are only allowed to keep six chickens where we live, and we already have two grown up hens... so as slippery as that slope is... do you have a kune kune pig Laura?
How gorgeous!! Do you know if they're all girls? We're not allowed to keep roosters here...
Evie, Charlie, Batman and Lulu...meet Spiderman! :)
Oh yes Celia, we aren't allowed to have roosters here either, they are all girls - or so they say! Lol, and yes, we are very big on superheroes in this house.
Cute, it's nice to have little chicks around to play with....Shame they grow so quickly but just think of all the eggs you'll get soon!
That produce shop sounds pretty exciting, Sounds like it makes for a great family day out when it's time to buy the chook food! :)
Your boys are so very lucky - having a Mum that will buy them chickens and teach them to care for them.
Mmmmm, eggs. And chicken poop for that wonderful garden of yours.
Hooray!!!! How did I miss this post???? They're gorgeous. How old are they? Isn't it sweet the cheeping noise they make :) You are funny Ali :)
Mrs Bok, one of them died yesterday :( I don't know why...
Sorry to hear about your chicky. Hope the rest are ok. Maybe put some sulphur quinn in their water just in case.
Which produce store is it? We go to Capalaba produce which has animals as well but yours sounds interesting :)
