Despite having a perfectly adequate nesting box, filled with lovely sugar cane mulch and comfortably placed under shelter, the chickens decided it wasn't quite right, and made their own.
And to be honest, I kind of agree with them. My humble attempt at a nesting box (not pictured!) is clearly just a wooden drawer filled with sugar cane mulch... whereas this... this is one well thought out, well made, cosy egg laying cocoon. The ladies obviously wanted it done properly...
And did it themselves...Which brings me to doing something else properly.
These photos of the boys with our lovely little silkie Edna were taken around a year ago. Edna was by far our favourite chicken. She was funny (when she walked her little head had to bob back and forth in time), gentle, and sweet. She laid lovely little eggs that the boys both coveted, and was just a delightful little creature to have around.

I was very sad about Edna. In the grand scheme of things I know she was just a chicken, but she was my responsibility and most certainly didn't deserve to die such an undignified death.

Oh, poor Edna. Lovely photos of her and the little one though.
Hazel you must spend your online time in the evenings at the same time as me - you always make me jump when you get in so quick with a comment! They are lovely photos of her with the boys - she was the only one that they could both catch!
Dear Edna, gorgeous name, gorgeous chookie....
Poor funny cute chicken... may she RIP.
Love the snuggly nest they made, could slip in there for a snooze myself!
(Very excited as we have finally made decision about the chicken house dilemma we were having & ordered one. Now for finding the pretty chooks we want!)
Edna was my maternal nanna's name Suzanne :) She was very special to me :)
Silkies are delightful chooks. I wonder at their practicalness in our climate with their non-waterproof soft feathers and all those feathers on their feet. Lovely chook whose company you enjoyed and whose life was with a purpose.
Poor Edna. She looks just like my Beverley. Even though they are only chooks you do get attached to them don't you? They become part of the family.
aww edna
so sorry about Edna, dogs an be so cruel sometimes :(
I do like the nest your girls have made, very professional! Mine also have lovely nesting boxes in their house, but just occasionally one will start to lay in the flower bed or something!
That sucks doesn't it Ali? Such a cute little chookie and the boys obviously loved her. We have had chooks for years and I didn't think I was attached to them at all .... until we got bantams. They are just in another league. RIP little Edna.
Sorry - forgot to add - your other chooks have a keen eye for design. Should put them on the Block (not the chopping block)!
Ali, really sorry to hear about Edna, I hope the dog's owner was suitably sorry for letting their pet run amok?
RIP little Edna. She was more furry than most cats I know!
How lovely that your girls have made themselves a proper nesting box!
Aw, poor Edna. She looks so soft and fluffy.
HUGS and squeezes for you your boys and little Edna. We miss our silkie too! And our other hens. Love the nesting place your chooks chose - what breeds have you got in now?
Thank you everyone for your kind words for Edna, it's much appreciated.
Gary I haven't spoken to the owners of the dog, it's not the first time it has come into our yard and killed a chicken. I reported it to the council - I don't really want to have bad words directly with a neighbour!
