So I don't know about you, but the wait for broccoli for me this year has been endless... eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeendless. Planted well before the start of winter, I am still waiting for the majority of my broccoli to actually broccoli. And what's quite terrible, is that I am pretty sure that now the cabbage moths have set in, there may not be a whole lot of broccoli-ing actually taking place. But it doesn't matter.
Nope.
I've found a new player in the field of tree-like greens.
And its name, is Broccoletti.
It seems to have quite a few names.
Personally I am quite happy to call this little green wonder whatever it likes, because, my blogging friends, broccoletti grows faster than radish.
Yep, that fast.
I sowed the seeds for this plant on the 25th of July, making this little treasure around 7 weeks old. From seed to table in seven weeks. It most certainly beats the 16+ weeks I have been waiting for the broccoli.
Having said all that, I should probably keep quiet about dumping broccoli forever until I have actually tasted broccoletti.
Although apparently it's quite delicious, stem, leaves, flowers and all.
And I'm all for living dangerously in the garden. So...
Broccoli - u r dumpt

we grew this winter http://mrsmacgregorsgarden.blogspot.com/2011/07/broccoli-raab.html and we enjoyed it
Geez Ali! You are totally at the forefront of schmancy new vegetable growing land. I have to do another bloody seed order now!
Thanks for providing a smile in the day...again. Too tired to be clever. Must stop. nite nite
Super cool! Is it a traditional variety or a hybrid? Where did you get the seeds from? It sounds like the answer to a short-winter-season-gardener's prayer.
Haven't heard of it before but will watch out for it as a possible next year crop because we don't have room for broccoli proper.
Esther I hadn't heard of it either - I thought I was planting badly spelt broccolini! But no, it's another thing altogether.
Elaine the seeds are from Eden seeds, so all heirloom and happy. I will really go gung ho with them next year, they are so much smaller and more rewarding than broccoli (for me!). They came up so quickly and I have read that just like broccoli you can cut them and they'll keep on shooting.
Although I still haven't tasted it!
Sorry, got too keen and pushed the wrong button!
Nite nite ali :)
Phoebe, I love the word forefront. And I am so excited to be at the forefront of tree-like vegetable growing! Maybe you could order some right this second and get a crop in before it gets too hot??!
JFH that is really funny, because I commented on your post but for the life of me I don't remember ever seeing broccoli raab before today! Oh I am getting old...
And you thought I was clever with my boring old egg plant Ali, you are onto all things new...thank you I will keep an eye out for this as our family is enjoying lots of green things these days and that looks delicious.....
Definitely a much better option that waiting all those weeks for broccoli.
Never heard of it - thanks Ali :D)
I too have been waiting and waiting and waiting for my broccoli to form heads and finally it has happened, well on 4 of the 6 plants anyway. Hopefully the other 2 do something before it gets too hot.
Me me me meeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!! I'm gonna get me some of them seeds!
U r fun e!
