After my spaghetti squash post last week, I knew I was going to crack and pick it fairly soon. Exactly when I wasn't sure, but the squash took the decision out of my hands by turning yellow overnight.Like a small oval beacon in the garden, signalling its readiness. I like that attribute in a vegetable.
I really like when bloggers show their produce next to a ruler or a pair of scissors for scale, and thought I might try to do similar.
I really like when bloggers show their produce next to a ruler or a pair of scissors for scale, and thought I might try to do similar.Looking around for an appropriate oval object, I soon found Felix's head.
I was quite uncertain how on earth spaghetti-like strands come out of a squash, but after boiling it for thirty minutes before cracking it open, it soon became apparent. I don't know how clear it is for you in the photo below, but the inside is like a tightly packed pack of spaghetti, just waiting to be teased out.
And so tease them out I did.
And found a whole new favourite for the garden. The spaghetti squash had a lovely, subtle flavour, much like a zucchini. As I was not convinced that the family would like it, I served it with a heavy bolognaise sauce, which was completely the wrong thing to do. The squash, which to me resembled the texture of glass noodles rather than pasta, deserved a far more delicate topping.
I have two more squash ready for the picking, and I am dreaming of a prawn and Thai basil accompaniment...
Spaghetti squash, you earned your right to the teepees you grew over.

I want to gobble it right up!!! Looks very edible to me. xo
Oh my, Ali! You have cracked the jackpot this time!
Too long ago for me to remember whether mine turned yellow and waved their tendrils at me imploring me to pick them! Yes, I like that attribute in a fruit too :-)
The idea of a lighter less-Italian-style sauce appeals. The squash is not a strong-flavoured one and something Thai sounds worth a whirl. Or even just butter and home-grown Garlic with a touch of Parmesan.
Great photos - you've captured the essence of the Spaghetti Squash. Now to figure out some way of finangling one from you ;-) I didn't plant any as space is tight and a Pumpkin came and planted itself right where I was going to grow SS - the Universe wins!
I serve it as a side dish mostly, steamed or boiled, then forked off the skin, add some butter and cracked pepper. I also found it makes excellent vege fritters! It stores well through Winter, in fact, we still have one sitting in the basket waiting to be eaten. We grew so many last Summer, we sort of got over it a bit!
Bolognaise - LOL! Well I guess they *do* call it spaghetti squash :) Actually I reckon bolognaise sauce is a pretty good way to get kids to eat anything.
And super impressive that you have any type of squash fruiting already.
L
wow im going to have to grow some of these , yummo :-)
I'd heard of them but never seen one before. It looks so good. You have convinced me to be more adventurous with what I grow.
So did the boys like it? Even if they didn't like eating it, I bet they were intrigued by its appearance.
I expect this squash would pair well with eggs and soft herbs.
It's hard to say Mark, smothered as it was in its bolognaise sauce. I did tell them that it was where spaghetti comes from though - what's the point of being a mother if you can't have a little fun sometimes?
They did eat it though, always a good sign.
Missy and Frugal Mumma, yes do!
L they were super fast growers, I've sown some more seeds already to see how they like the heat here too.
Dixiebelle I didn't get as many as I thought I would, some of the vines just didn't produce and I am not sure why. Oh well, I do have more on the way!
Elaine alongside a vegetable that glows when it's ready, one that sows itself is eight up there among my favourites!
And LL - it was YUM. And I think perhaps a great food for little people when they start grabbing the food from the plate themselves :)
oh I love spaghetti squash! I have tried to grow it here so many times and the vines have rotted away - I really must try it again. Yours looks so yummy - the texture is also similar to gemsquash.
That looks delicious, and if your boys believed you, well done!!
Yay! I'm definitely going to give it a try.
AA I have never had gemsquash, I'll look out for it. Greenbackyard, they were a little dubious... because we have made spaghetti ourselves before. I told them there were different types. The lie just keeps getting bigger :D
Veggiegobbler - yes, do try it. And then post your recipies! You are a fabulous cook :)
That IS interesting, thank you! I've never grown these - I always assumed the insides would be mushy...
I always wonder how they look inside since we are growing them for the first time this spring. I found that the size of your squash is much clearer than using a ruler. Much more easy to imagine.
Today, I went to the beachfront with my children. I found a sea shell and
gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said "You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear." She put the shell to her ear and screamed.
There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear.
She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is completely off topic but I
had to tell someone!
