The Hanging Cucumbers of Mitchelton

I adore a good cucumber.

This variety is called "Muncher Burpless", and it most certainly lives up to its name, being both munchable, and not causing any burping.
I have the cucumber plants growing up one of my bamboo teepees, sitting in a bed with lots of lovely aged cow manure. I am pretty sure I threw some ground coffee into the mound as well, but that's hardly surprising - I collect so much coffee now that I use it in everything.

So whether it's the coffee or the manure, I am doing something right as I am picking a lovely fresh cucumber every other day. I love them fresh with mayonnaise, or sliced, salted and squeezed to within an inch of their lives and then drenched with lime and creme fraiche.
Yum.

I like the sound of this one Ali. Is it like a Lebonese cuc.?
BTW - how exactly do you squeeze it? Sorry - that sounds a little weird. I mean, I haven't heard that method of prep before. Is it like squeezed on a juicer? cheers Wendy

Oh, delish, the squeezed-lime-creme-fraiche version sounds SO good!

Hey Wendy, no, not in a juicer... you slice it up, salt it, leave it for a bit, wrap it up in a tea towel and then squeeze out as much moisture as you can. It's a bit of a pain to do, but very much worth it. You then dress it with the lime and creme fraiche, salt and pepper.

And yes Dixibelle - it's really good!

Oh, they look wonderful, and so prolific! I've never understood the burpless thing personally - I've never burped after cucumber - does it really happen?

Yum-o. I love them with cream cheese but have never tried the lime or the teatowel squeezing bit. Also had no idea about the burping until we planted some burpless about 2 weeks ago. melx

I'm jealous now. My cucumbers were rubbish this year. Perhaps that was down to the absence of cow manure!

Oh I LOVE a good cucumber too! We're trying to grow Lebanese ones this year, and so far we've had just three cukes - they were going gangbusters until the deluge. Have just planted apple cucumbers, fingers crossed! Yours look spectacular, Ali!

PS. are you in Melbourne or Brisbane? I thought Melbourne, but when I was clicking here via your blogspot profile, it said Brissie!

I have never heard of your cucumber squeezing lime recipe. That sounds great, if i could just get a cucumber seedling to survive the snails I'll be happy.

I hate cucumbers. Unless they are in tzatziki. I get horrendous burping attacks after eating the smallest nibble!
I tried growing burpless last year because I thought that I just misunderstood the joys of the cucumber but no. Burpless and all, I still don't like em.
But yours look fab!

ohwwww that sound YUM!

Hope mine do well this year... They don't tend to in Tassie... I will have to do my slug/snail attack again tonight...

Another one here who has never done a cucumber burp, but I'm all for munching them. They look magnificent.

Now that's what I want my cucumbers to look like, though having just planted out my third lot of seedlings due to those retched snails, I think I'll be waiting a while. I will, however, keep your squeezy lime and creme fresh cucumber recipe in mind (think you could have a market for that one).

Also in this busy silly season, don't forget to rest with a slice of cold cucumber over each eye...SO REFRESHING! The boys will think its great and it really does help with the bags...that is if your having any late nights! :)
